7/24/2002 09:18:00 AM|W|P|Danny Eagle|W|P| One Big Trip, is a documentary DVD about a cross-continental road trip bundled with a CD of Hieros latest. As the name implies, it is also a project full of gratuitous drug taking and beats from the fine folks at Hieroglyphics who brought you the likes of Del the Funkee Homosapien, Souls of Mischief, Casual, and many others monumental hip hop icons. No controlled substance is exempt from appearing in this film; Mushrooms, E, Opium, Reefer, Booze, and Strippers. Yes, strippers are a drug. This crew of five is made up of two sexy gals and three wild and crazy guys who run a camper van through places I wouldnt drive an armored personnel carrier. The deep south, the ghettos of the north, and a town full of Carnies!! There is no plot and no mission; the only recurring themes are the impending turn of the century (filmed in 1999), the ingestion of mind-altering substances and mind-altering conversations with the people of the good ol' US of A. A late-night conversation with a moustached mime in army fatigues made me glad that I wasn't out in the world doing random interviews. In Vegas they have a chat with a man who claims Elvis tells him to burn things. They suggest burning one down in the parking lot with him. One Big Trip has enough interesting moments to keep my attention and matches good editing with great photography. Unlike its more packaged, drama-focused MTV counterpart Road Rules, One Big Trip keeps the attention on the strange scenes and happenings American life, rather than the cast of the show. They talk to alligator wrestlers, crazy homeless people, and spiritual gurus, and junkyard employees. One Big Trip manages to catch some seriously honest and human moments on tape and I'm not talking about weepy-eyed make-up bonding sessions between crewmembers. I'm talking about the honesty you get when you confront a heroin addict who sells you $25 worth of paper instead of weed. For better or worse, you also get to see the honesty of young people on drugs. The same conversations heard on One Big Trip I've heard a thousand times from people on drugs in college. Alien colonization, God is Love, the universe is like so big and like so full of love type of crap. Keep the lollypop in your mouth and shut the fuck up. The soundtrack to the movie is dope though it doesn't match the one provided on the other side of the disc. A Common track with DJ Premier backing him up is sadly missing from the CD in the package along with multiple other gems by Mos Def and Astralwerks. What you will find on the CD is some new gear from the likes of Jurassic 5, Loot Pack, Del, Swollen Members, and Hieroglyphics. The CD is pretty good, hitting a range of new music from a solid talent pool. Not a bad deal all around if you ask me. But don't ask me, I didn't pay for this thing. To be honest the only reason I watched it was because of a picture on the inside cover of a girl's bum.|W|P|85278642|W|P|Hiero Imperium | One Big Trip|W|P|scottlmoe@gmail.com
